How to Maintain Storm Doors

By ETO Doors

Storm doors are an important part of the home that protect the interior. Storm doors serve two functions: to protect the home from the elements with glass panels, and to provide some ventilation through screen panels.

Inspect the Safety Spring

The safety spring hands over the door, and it prevents someone from forcing the door open. It should be connected, and the chain above the door should not touch the top of your head. If the spring is missing or damaged, you can buy a replacement from your local hardware store.

Inspect the Door Closer

You can make sure the door closer runs smoothly by never allowing it to rest on the pneumatic tube on the crimp rod. Use the stop only to hold the door open, sliding it to the open side when you are not trying to hold the door open. Tighten the screws on the door’s bracket as well, replacing any that seem stripped or that come loose from the door. You should also keep the safety chain attached to the door at all times. The last part of the door closing mechanism deals with the speed with which the door closes. Too slow and guests may try to force it open. Adjust the speed with the adjustment screw until you get a nice, smooth motion.

Inspect the Latch

Check that the doorframe doesn’t need to be adjusted, which can happen if it’s not properly shimmed. If the door feels loose in its jamb, it will bend and warp the door over time. If the door is sagging, try to pinpoint if it’s sagging from atop or below, then tighten the screws on those hinges.
